Welcome to the Firestorm Dojos' 8th web presence. To mark the 2010 launch of our latest web site, called 'Senjo', we invite all site visitors to register here with us and to join us at our dojo if you live nearby. Our dojo offers first class facilities for serious martial arts training. To learn more you are welcome to wander through our web site and if you need more information then please contact us.

Zen Do Kai LogoWe train in the Australian freestyle martial art called Zen Do Kai. This style was developed by Bob Jones and emphasises the best of everything in progression. This means that we adopt the very best, and proven, techniques from all martial arts styles and build them into our own. We place an emphasis on continuous improvement and on training for strength together.

Kidz KarateOur Kidz Karate school is extremely popular and very large. We offer a children's Zen Do Kai martial arts curriculum from white belt through to black belt. Firestorm's Kidz Karate school has produced many accomplished black belt martial artists. Many of our junior students later advance to continue their training at Firestorm's senior school. Why not give your children a head start with self defence?

BJC Muay Thai is also offered at the Firestorm Centre. Muay Thai is a Thai fighting style that incorporates punching and kicking as well as techniques using elbows and knees. Many BJC Muay Thai fighters train with a view to entering tournament competitions and some actually train in Thailand on annual visits there.

Firestorm Dojos Little Dragons school is designed for children aged between 3 and 5 years. It provides a fun filled atmosphere of play and fitness underpinned by order and gentle martial arts principles. It also instils values such as respect, sharing, patience, kindness and honesty.

We are conducting a FREE W.A.S.P. introductory workshop on 19th November at the Firestorm Centre.

This class will cover a general overview of simple techniques and infomation to equip women with the basic tools of empowerment in the face of assault or attack. The class is designed to allow the participants to get a hands on trial of these strategies in a safe environment in order to build confidence in their use for other situations.
During the two hour class we will cover grabs, confinement strategies (i.e. being held down etc.) and basic striking techniques designed to provide maximum impact and effectiveness.
The strategies you will learn cover physical defences that are not strength based (ie. work on anyone, no matter their size) as well as the psychology of the attacker and the effects of fear on the body and what you can do to get around it. We will also briefly cover topics that provide a better understanding on what to do if you ARE attacked, what details to note, who to go to etc.

The workshop itself is a general overview of our W.A.S.P. (Women's Assertive Self Protection) Program that we run in 8 week units. Participation in the workshop does not commit you to the WASP course but will give you a good start to your own self protection requirements.

The workshop  (and W.A.S.P. Program ) are facilitated by fully qualified instructors with many years of instruction and training between them.

Again the 2 hour intro class is on 19th November at 1.00pm. It will be held at the Firestorm Centre, unit 9,21 Power Road, Bayswater...right near Bayswater station. Bookings are essential so if you'd like to book a place or require any further information please call Kyoshi Mike on 0419 327 672. If you have any friends or family that would benefit from this workshop please feel free to pass on the information or book a place for them as well.

What a BIG weekend!!!!

Starting with the BJMA 40th anniversary black belt grading at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Over 350 black and brown belts performing the Black Belt Kata, Lull Before the Storm. Words like overpowering, awesome , inspiring do not do a sight like this justice. The atmosphere was electric from the start of the day to the finish. The whos who of Zen Do Kai were there to help celebrate this great event and to honour the chief on his “40th Birthday”.

Congratulations to all who performed on the day. The standard was very high and the energy level was fantastic. It was a tribute to the style.

In regards to our club, our students did us proud. Roslyn Quin and Joe Raudino attempted (no ACED) the shodan ho grading. Their focus and commitment was outstanding. Donna Devlin and James Grant backed up this high standard with exceptional shodan gradings with Donna being selected to read out her essay to the crowd. They both received the title of sempai for their efforts. The last grading of the day saw Liesl Heinrich and Simon Osborne grade excel in the Nidan grading. Their endurance, focus and power saw them achieve this level with great attitude and strength. Both came through to dai sempai. A credit to their long preparation and training.

So to sum up the grading results: 2 new shodan ho, (probationary black belts), 2 shodan, (full 1st degree black belts) and 2 nidan (2nd degree black belts)

Also Sempai Mike Devlin and Sensei Chris Mendonez received important accolades. Mike received ZDK Black Belt of the year for 2010 and Chris received BJMA Contribution award for 2010. Well deserved and well done guys.

To all Firestorm students that graded on the day or received accolades on the day, well done. You did the club, your families and especially yourselves proud. And you made your instructor very proud indeed.

On a very personal note, I would like to congratulate my Daughter, Roslyn Quin, on achieving of Black Belt. I know it was a mountain to climb but she did it with great aplomb and character. She made me very proud to be her dad.

Later in the evening a few of us attended the 40th Anniversary Ball held at the Peninsula Rooms in the Docklands. What a night!!!!!

Everyone who had anything to do with BJMA (in particular Zen Do Kai and the “Chief”) over the past  40 years was there. A lot of famous (and infamous) names mingled with the guests and were very relaxed for this great evening. Make sure you catch up with those who attended to find out the nitty gritty of the evening.

Kyoshi Mike QuinEvery year Firestorm hosts its annual Family Night. In 2009, in December, we combined this with our Christmas break up and our Awards night. It was very well attended and everyone enjoyed catching up outside of the rigour of our usual training evenings.

On the night we typically include various demonstrations from our senior students and our younger warriors. Log in to see a video of one of the demos that was conducted on the night.

Kyoshi Mike QuinWell, the temperature topped 43 degrees outside but a small band of committed students turned up to start 2010 off with a bang. Spirits were high and all participated in the modified training session (due to the heat).

I wish to thank all who attended tonight's training and I hope you all got something out of it. I know I did.

It bodes well for Firestorm in the coming year to have such dedicated students.

Games ArcadeThis is to inform site members that, by popular demand, we have created a new games arcade in our brand new Firestorm site. Our previous site was overloaded with games and a selection of these were extremely popular. We have restored some of these, such as Samurai and 3 Foot Ninja and also a few of the classics that appeared in our 'Reloaded' web presence such as Space Invaders and Pac Man.

But this time we've included some new titles including Karate King, Kickboxing, Masters of Wrestling and even a cool Apache chopper game called 'Fire Storm', to name a few. And as a special appearance in the Firestorm arcade, we introduce Galaga as a special classic addition.

So there you go; but don't let these get in the way of your regular training. Use them to chill out with after your training sessions. Happy game playing.

In Bushido, and see you back at the dojo soon guys, Kyoshi Mike.
