What a BIG weekend!!!!

Starting with the BJMA 40th anniversary black belt grading at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Over 350 black and brown belts performing the Black Belt Kata, Lull Before the Storm. Words like overpowering, awesome , inspiring do not do a sight like this justice. The atmosphere was electric from the start of the day to the finish. The whos who of Zen Do Kai were there to help celebrate this great event and to honour the chief on his “40th Birthday”.

Congratulations to all who performed on the day. The standard was very high and the energy level was fantastic. It was a tribute to the style.

In regards to our club, our students did us proud. Roslyn Quin and Joe Raudino attempted (no ACED) the shodan ho grading. Their focus and commitment was outstanding. Donna Devlin and James Grant backed up this high standard with exceptional shodan gradings with Donna being selected to read out her essay to the crowd. They both received the title of sempai for their efforts. The last grading of the day saw Liesl Heinrich and Simon Osborne grade excel in the Nidan grading. Their endurance, focus and power saw them achieve this level with great attitude and strength. Both came through to dai sempai. A credit to their long preparation and training.

So to sum up the grading results: 2 new shodan ho, (probationary black belts), 2 shodan, (full 1st degree black belts) and 2 nidan (2nd degree black belts)

Also Sempai Mike Devlin and Sensei Chris Mendonez received important accolades. Mike received ZDK Black Belt of the year for 2010 and Chris received BJMA Contribution award for 2010. Well deserved and well done guys.

To all Firestorm students that graded on the day or received accolades on the day, well done. You did the club, your families and especially yourselves proud. And you made your instructor very proud indeed.

On a very personal note, I would like to congratulate my Daughter, Roslyn Quin, on achieving of Black Belt. I know it was a mountain to climb but she did it with great aplomb and character. She made me very proud to be her dad.

Later in the evening a few of us attended the 40th Anniversary Ball held at the Peninsula Rooms in the Docklands. What a night!!!!!

Everyone who had anything to do with BJMA (in particular Zen Do Kai and the “Chief”) over the past  40 years was there. A lot of famous (and infamous) names mingled with the guests and were very relaxed for this great evening. Make sure you catch up with those who attended to find out the nitty gritty of the evening.
